The Power Plant

Situated within the venerated Rideau Hall ballroom in Canada’s capital city Ottawa, Norval Morrisseau’s seminal painting Androgyny (1983) prominently sits, creating a complicated backdrop for the state ceremonies that occur before it. With Tautology (2012), Linklater has appropriated the central figure of this painting and has created an editioned red neon wall sculpture. In close proximity to this work, he presents a new component to the project with a singular performance which will occur over the course of five months. Working with a live performer who will embody specific text and gesture, this embedded choreographed performance will address the complexity of Morriseau’s painting, transformation of form and relationships to location.
