Ian Wallace: The Economy of the Image

For over four decades, renowned Vancouver artist Ian Wallace has drawn on both the broad sweep of art history as well as more recent developments in contemporary art to inform a wide range of innovative and conceptually rigorous installation, performance, painting, and photographic practices.

Wallace’s exhibition and accompanying artist’s book is a major multi-part new work commissioned by The Power Plant in Fall 2010, which revolved around a suite of twelve large-scale photolamination paintings. The artist’s book reproduces each of the twelve works individually, and then systematically increases the levels of magnification to focus on details that were selected by the artist.

This 88-page hardcover catalogue also features an introduction by the director of The Power Plant and curator of the exhibition, Gregory Burke, as well as an interview conducted by Toronto-based writer and artist Josh Thorpe in conversation with Wallace.
