The Historical ruse : art in Montreal = La ruse historique : l'art a Montreal

On view from 22 April - 12 June in 1988, The Historical Ruse: Art in Montreal (La Ruse historique) was an exhibition guest-curated by Chantal Pontbriand. Eager to produce a formal statement responding to their needs, faced with a socio-cultural reality dominated by difference and resistance, the Montreal-based artists in this exhibition represented a desire to work on the facts of contemporary reality in light of the most rigorous artistic activity. Whether born or converted Montrealers, all the artists represented in this exhibition lived in and around the city, demonstrating that a place can offer distinction and thus provide a unique perspective on artistic development.

This 128-page softcover exhibition catalogue features images of work by the exhibiting artists, as well as an essay by Chantal Pontbriand and profiles on each of the exhibiting artists.
