POWER BALL 6

Shinan Govani National Post
The Power Ball is “one of the most fabulous annual events in Toronto”

Leanne Delap, The Globe and Mail
The “frenetic ball is always a blast” and the “gala is so entrenched in the social calendar that it sells out early each year.”

Rolyn Chambers, Flash
“The ballsy art scene and the powerfull money scene came together for a debauched game of Twister-Monopoly called Power Ball” which “many Torontonians would have given their first-born childless spinster aunt to attend”

Sharon Dunn, National Post
“A carnival atmosphere prevailed at The Power Plant gallery’s much-anticipated Power Ball 6”

Daphne Gordon, Toronto Star
The Power Ball was “a night of networking, noshing, and art appreciation.”

A “surrealist tomorrow” erupted at Power Ball 6!

The Power Plant’s highly anticipated fundraising event launched the season of the summer fête by gathering together a ‘who’s who’ in the worlds of contemporary art, business, fashion, popular culture and high cuisine for a stylish, sumptuous soirée.

On June 3, 2004, The Power Plant unfurled its most extravagant spectacle of splendor and surprise at Power Ball 6. Brimming with a rich tapestry of performers, spirited entertainment, and party revelers, Power Ball 6 was Toronto’s centre of social gravity. Amidst the swirl of activity and excitement, the event raised an unprecedented $160,000 net! All proceeds go towards The Power Plant’s upcoming exhibitions and educational programmes.

The vision of the Power Ball 6 Committee, led by Co-Chairs Christine Davis and Lonti Ebers, resulted in an avant-garde display of a glowing pickle bar, silent disco, a phenomenal recreation of a live Barbie doll, and a caché of entertainment. With a roster of over one hundred artists and talent, the line between guest and performer was blurred as spectacles erupted out of the crowd. Performance art and visual art were key to the evening and were provided by artists including Stevie Lawson, Laura Kikauka, JJ Jones, Chrysanne Stathacos, John Greyson and Wanda Koop. The evening also included remarkable vocal performances by Feist, Chris Rouse and Alannah Myles, unbelievable feats presented by Zero Gravity Circus, and a display of various talents from over sixty Randolph Academy performers. Lighting Designer Paul Mathiesen lent his creative talent to creating moods within the various spaces of the event, the most notable of which was his installation of chandeliers to animate the silent disco.

Equipped with an army of make-up artists, Lead Sponsor Holt Renfrew and Stila whipped partygoers into shape by dramatically glamorizing guests with glitter, gloss, and the bat of an eyelash. In the midst of the beauty school obstacle course, JIE and his team of artists were in high demand as guests clamored to be transformed with colourul and abstract hair creations. Pouty lips, dramatic lashes, and asymmetrical hairstyles were worn by attendees, ensuring Power Ball 6 had an extra-special style edge.

Guests were treated to an explosion of culinary talent presented by Senses. Whole suckling pigs, lobster bisque presented as a cappuccino, spicy tomatillo gazpacho in the unlikely form of a popsicle, and sweet coconut sushi were but a few of the indulgences on the menu. Senses lived up to its appellation by appealing to all five, while cocktails, compliments of Bacardi, and wine courtesy of Henry of Pelham tantalized the senses even further.

Power Ball 6 also marked the launch of John Körmeling’s Mobile Fun, presented by Saab Canada. Mobile Fun – a large sculpture in the form of a ferris wheel that is part of The Power Plant’s summer exhibition. Mobile Fun has one major difference from the average ferris wheel – passenger gondolas are substituted with automobiles that are driven onto the wheel. Power Ball attendees delighted in being the first to experience the exhibit through taking a ride on the art piece which offers a unique perspective on the city.

This year’s Power Ball also featured the ‘Power Draw’ raffle, with coveted prizes bestowed upon the following lucky winners:

Tony Scherman: London Calling—an art flight for two to London, UK. Round trip executive 1st airfare, a two night stay at the luxurious Park Lane hotel, and an exclusive insider tour of the world of contemporary art.
