PowerBall 9 PosterPOWER BALL 9: REVOLUTION

The Power Plant Gallery Celebrates its 20th Anniversary with Revolutionary Party at Power Ball 9

The who's who of Toronto's arts and fashion scene rose up and marched to The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery at the Harbourfront Centre to join the REVOLUTION at Power Ball 9. Dressed in their revolutionary best, guests marked the 20th anniversary and helped support The Power Plant, Canada's leading groundbreaking contemporary art gallery, by uniting in revelry and rebellion. Featuring radical art installations and performances, the event highlighted various revolutions - sexual, industrial, political, cyber, and design to showcase their connection to contemporary art.

Considered the social event of the year, Power Ball has changed the face of fundraisers in Toronto by defying the traditional black tie convention and incorporating glitz, glamour and edge.

"REVOLUTION was the perfect theme to capture what the Power Ball and The Power Plant contribute to the art community," said Claire Christie, Co-Chair of Power Ball 9. "Toronto's cultural scene is constantly evolving, and this institution plays a leading role in that evolution. At the Power Ball, we celebrate those who support the arts by throwing a smashing party that takes the city by storm."

Power Ball 9: REVOLUTION combined art, fashion, music and culture into an evening of rebellion. In addition to showcasing contemporary art and interactive installations including Network Touch, a virtual kissing booth and VIRG, a by-request virtual video juke box, cutting edge artists and performers were on display as modern day revolutionaries. The event also featured music and projection artists Bruce LaBruce, David Mabb, Andrew Zealley/PSBEUYS and Jonathan Cohen. New York City underground buzz band Earl Greyhound pounded through two sets of explosive guitar rock, while Team DMT and Juicetan – Broken Social Scene’s drummer Justin Peroff – kept the revolutionaries dancing into the wee hours.

Celebrating 20 Years

The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, converted from a Power Station in 1987, is among the finest public galleries in the world and the premier non-collecting Canadian venue for the presentation of new art. Since 1987, The Power Plant has distinguished itself as a strong and independent Canadian voice in the international contemporary art arena.

"Contemporary art is alive and strong in Toronto," says Gregory Burke, Director, The Power Plant. "The Power Plant has been instrumental in the promotion of these artists and the revolutionizing of our community’s approach to the arts.”
