Candice Breitz

Celebrated for her dynamic multi-media explorations of music fandom and her darkly humorous subversions of film conventions, Candice Breitz is the recipient of our 2009 Commissioning Program, supported by the Toronto-based not-for-profit group Partners In Art. Breitz’s new project focuses on the experiences of identical twins in Toronto and will be part of a career-wide survey— the first in North America. The exhibition will feature such critically acclaimed works as Legend (A Portrait of Bob Marley) (2005) featuring 30 fans each singing the famed album Legend from beginning to end, and Him + Her (2008), where film images of Jack Nicholson meet those of Meryl Streep. Following the inclusion of Breitz’s Mother + Father (2005) in the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, the exhibition opens during the Toronto International Film Festival as part the ‘Future Projections’ program.
