Ami Barak is an independent curator and critic based in Paris and curator of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche’s 2013 Exhibition A, Sur Les Chapeaux de Roue – To Get Off to a Flying Start. Former director of the Frac Languedoc-Roussillon from 1993 to 2002, he was also the President of the International Association of Contemporary Art Curators – IKT from 2002 to 2005. Former Head of the Visual Art Department at the City Council of Paris (2003 – 2008), Barak was the Artistic Director and Coordinator of Nuit Blanche in Paris in 2003 and 2004. He has curated numerous international exhibitions, including Art for the World [the Expo] the City of Forking Paths at the World Expo Shanghai 2010 (featuring twenty monumental sculptures by Chinese and international artists), and co-curated the Romanian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, 2011. He is currently a Lecturer at the Paris Sorbonne University and a permanent collaborator for the magazine IDEA arts+society.
In this bilingual lecture conducted in French and English, Barak will discuss his contribution to Toronto’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche and compare his experience here with his earlier work on the Parisian iteration. Describing Nuit Blanche as the city turned into a one-night, open-air museum, Barak will reflect on the process of taking manufactured objects back to the streets and reconciling the public with the ubiquitous status of the artwork.
Le commissaire d’exposition et critique parisien Ami Barak est le concepteur de Sur les Chapeaux de Roue - To Get Off To A Flying Start Secteur A dans le cadre de la Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2013.
M. Barak fut le directeur du Fonds régional d’art contemporain (FRAC) Languedoc-Roussillon, Montpellier de 1993 à 2002 ainsi que le président de l’International Association of Contemporary Art Curators – IKT de 2002 à 2005. Chef du Département des arts visuels de Paris de 2003 à 2008, M. Barak a agit en tant que directeur artistique et coordonnateur de la Nuit Blanche de Paris en 2003 et 2004.
M. Barak a été le commissaire de nombreuses expositions internationales, incluant Art for the World [the Expo] the City of Forking Paths - 20 sculptures monumentales présentées le long du Expo Boulevard lors de l'Exposition universelle, Shanghai 2010. Il a également été le co-curateur du Pavillon Roumain lors de la 54e Biennale de Venise en 2011 et tout récemment curateur de I am also...Douglas Gordon, au Tel Aviv Museum of Art, 2013. Il est actuellement curateur indépendant et chargé de cours à l’Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.
Lors de cette conférence qui se déroulera en anglais et en français, Ami Barak présentera son projet pour la Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2013 et le mettra en perspective avec son travail en tant que directeur artistique et coordonnateur de la Nuit Blanche de Paris en 2003 et 2004. Réfléchissant à cette Nuit Blanche lors de laquelle la ville se transforme en musée à ciel ouvert, il a envisagé que des objets du quotidien, manufacturés et choisis par des artistes, retournent à nouveau à la rue, Ami Barak discutera du lien entre le grand public et le statut de l'objet dans l'art contemporain.
