This Power Talk will cover a survey of the work of Charles Gaines, covering his early work in systems and numerals to his most recent work with language and representation. Hear a discussion on ways in which Gaines’ works rethink notions of subjectivity, and how these notions are manifested in works of art. Gaines will also speak about the fine difference between chance and arbitrary judgments—on the one hand being expressive and intuitional, and on the other both sharing the characteristic of being indeterminate—and how works of art can uniquely interrogate this difference.
