Douglas Coupland (born 1961) is a Canadian novelist. Since 1991, he has written thirteen novels published in most languages. He has written on visual art for the New York Times, ArtForum, the New Republic, the Kunsthaus Bregenz, the Moderna Museet and the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian. In 2000 Coupland recommenced a visual practice that merges art with design and text. A specific feature of Coupland’s overall work is its synthesis of high culture, popular culture, technology, post modern spirituality, media systems and mass communications. Acting as a cultural commentator, Coupland’s talk will draw on his art practice to address the notion of “public” and “private”, fiction and non-fiction.
