The Power Plant

For this year's Face to Face, The Power Plant will feature internationally renowned artist Franz Erhard Walther in-conversation with Sarah Milroy.

The evening will begin at 6:30PM with a cocktail reception, with the program beginning at 7:30PM. Dinner will be served at 8:15PM.

Franz Erhard Walther (born in Fulda, Germany, 1939) is one of Germany’s most prominent artists whose work has expanded the wider discussion of contemporary art practices. His work has been featured in a number of important exhibitions including: When Attitudes Become Form, Kunsthalle Bern; Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld; and Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (1969); Spaces, Museum of Modern Art, New York (1970); documenta V, VII and VIII, Kassel (1972, 1982 and 1987); and Out of Actions: Between Performance and the Object, 1949 – 1979, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1988). Recent exhibitions of Walther’s work include Franz Erhard Walther: The Body Draws, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle (2015); Franz Erhard Walther, MUDAM, Luxembourg (2015); Franz Erhard Walther, The Body Decides, WIELS Centre d'Art Contemporain, Brussels (2014) and CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain de Bordeaux (2014); and Franz Erhard Walther, Work as Action, Dia Art Foundation, New York (2010–12). Walther’s work is housed in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York; Dia Art Foundation, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Art Institute Chicago; The Centre Pompidou, Paris; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg; Nationalgalerie Berlin; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg; Kunsthaus Zürich; Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; and MAMCO Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva. Walther’s work is represented by galleries Jocelyn Wolff, Paris; KOW, Berlin; Peter Freeman, New York; and Skopia, Geneva.

Sarah Milroy is a Toronto-based critic and writer, contributing widely to such publications as the Globe and Mail, The Walrus, Canadian Art and Border Crossings. In 1991, she and Michael de Pencier co-founded the Canadian Art Foundation, and she served as the editor and publisher of Canadian Art magazine from 1991 to 1996. From 2001 to 2010, Milroy was the staff critic of the Globe and Mail, covering major exhibitions and artists' projects from all parts of Canada. Milroy has also contributed essays to many scholarly catalogues, including Winnipeg Now (Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2013), Jack Chambers: Light, Spirit, Time, Place and Life (Art Gallery of Ontario, 2011), Fred Herzog (Douglas & McIntyre, 2011), Tsimshian Treasures: The Remarkable Journey of the Dundas Collection (Donald Ellis, 2007) and Greg Curnoe: Life and Stuff (Art Gallery of Ontario, 2001). Most recently, she co-curated the 2015 exhibition From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia for the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. Next year, also at the Duwich Picture Gallery, Sarah will present the first full-scale monographic exhibition on the British modernist painter Vanessa Bell, followed, in 2018, by an exhibition of Canadian artist David Milne.
