The Power Plant

In this program, co-presented with Kuumba, artist Leonardo Drew will discuss the evolution of his work with Amin Alsaden, The Power Plant’s Nancy McCain & Bill Morneau Curatorial Fellow. The two will expand upon themes explored in the upcoming Summer 2021 exhibition, Propelled into Otherness. This conversation will conclude with questions from the audience.

Leonardo Drew

Leonardo Drew (b. 1961 in Tallahassee, FL) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Parsons School of Design, New York, NY, and received his BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, NY. Solo exhibitions have been held at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC (2020); de Young, Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, CA (2017); Galleria Napolinobilissima, Naples (2011); and Fine Art Society, London (2009). Drew has participated in numerous group exhibitions held at various institutions around the world, including the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC (2019); Baltimore Museum of Art, MD (2017); Studio Museum in Harlem, NY (2015); Denver Art Museum, CO (2013); and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2010). His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; and Tate, London.

Amin Alsaden

Amin Alsaden is a curator, scholar, and educator whose work focuses on transnational exchanges of ideas and expertise across cultural boundaries. Currently the Nancy McCain and Bill Morneau Curatorial Fellow at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, his curatorial practice is committed to disseminating inclusive narratives that challenge existing canons and hegemonic epistemological and power structures. He is particularly interested in how artists and architects ponder collective experiences in the public realm, level political and institutional critique, and envision novel spatial responses to questions of belonging, displacement, and exile. His research explores modern and contemporary art and architecture in the Global South. His work often involves documenting endangered heritage and examining how precarious archives and scarce resources shape lopsided global narratives. Alsaden holds a PhD and an MA from Harvard University, an MArch from Princeton University, and a BArch from the American University of Sharjah, and has published and lectured widely.
