The Power Plant

Portrait of Maria Lind by artist Bernd Krauss and Artservices

Maria Lind is a curator and critic based in Stockholm, where she is Director of Tensta Konsthall. Previously, she served as Director of the Graduate Program, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (2008-2010) and as Director of Iaspis, Stockholm (2005-2007). Lind was also Director of Kunstverein München (2002-2004) where, together with a curatorial team, she ran a program which involved artists such as Deimantas Narkevicius, Oda Projesi, Annika Eriksson, Bojan Sarcevic, Philippe Parreno and Marion von Osten. Lind has served as Curator at Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1997-2001) and Co-Curator of Manifesta 2 (1998). Responsible for Moderna Museet Projekt, Lind worked with artists on a series of 29 commissions. She also curated What if: Art on the Verge of Architecture and Design (2000). She guest-curated the group exhibition Abstract Possible: The Tamayo Take at Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2011).

She has contributed widely to newspapers and magazines and to numerous catalogues and other publications. She is the co-editor of the books Curating with Light Luggage and Collected Newsletter (Revolver Archiv für aktuelle Kunst), Taking the Matter into Common Hands: Collaborative Practices in Contemporary Art (Blackdog Publishing), as well as The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art (Sternberg Press). Among her recent co-edited publications are Contemporary Art and Its Commercial Markets: A Report on Current Conditions and Future Scenarios and Performing the Curatorial: With and Beyond Art both at Sternberg Press. She edited Abstraction as part of MIT’s and Whitechapel Gallery’s series Documents on Contemporary Art. She is the 2009 recipient of the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement. In the fall of 2010 Selected Maria Lind Writin g was published by Sternberg Press.

Drawing on her interests in exploring the formats and methodologies connected with the art institution, Lind will discuss the implications and results of working with contemporary art at an art center in the midst of the Stockholm suburb of Tensta. Located in a late modernist residential area with approx 20,000 inhabitants, most of whom have a trans-local background, working at Tensta Konsthall has challenged the staff to consider issues of inhabitation, embeddedness and autonomy anew.

Workshop: Contemporary Collaborative Strategies

Maria Lind will lead workshop participants in dialogue about contemporary collaborative strategies and curatorial methodologies around horizontal exchange. Artists Liesbeth Bik, Jos Van der Pol and Nadia Belerique as well as The Power Plant Assistant Curator Julia Paoli will reflect on how these collective approaches to exhibition-making are taken up by current exhibitions.
