 Shakura S'Aida

The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery is delighted to announce a dynamic program of events to celebrate the closing week of its Winter 2022 Season.

Join us for a unique performance in the Fleck Clerestory by Canadian vocalist Shakura S'Aida, within Sandra Brewster's site-specific installation DENSE.

This performance takes place on the final day of The Power Plant’s Winter 2022 Season featuring solo exhibitions Sandra Brewster: By Way of Communion, Sasha Huber: YOU NAME IT, and Shona Illingworth: Topologies of Air.

Brooklyn-born, Swiss-raised & Canadian-based Shakura S’Aida is a versatile vocalist and consummate entertainer. From her beginnings as world music band Kaleefah’s lead singer, she has blown audiences away with her scorching vocal style, uncanny ability to deliver powerful original songs and to get deep into the guts of the most venerable standard. Performing in over 30 countries, Shakura is back in the studio; this time with co-producers Donna Grantis (Prince/3 rd Eye Girl), Keb’ Mo’ and Roger Costa (Jeff Healey). The new album features collaborations with international artists including Eric Gales and Lee Oskar. She has previously performed with musicians such as Jimmy Smith, Lee Oskar (WAR), Bettye LaVette and Keb Mo’ and has recently been a guest host on CBC Radio 2’s Weekend Morning.

Sandra Brewster is a Canadian visual artist based in Toronto. She engages with themes including identity, representation, and memory, centring a Black presence. The daughter of Guyanese-born parents, she is especially attuned to the experiences of people of Caribbean heritage and their ongoing relationships with back home. Brewster’s meditations on being and place are expressed within her drawings, video, and photo-based mixed media works that range from 2-dimensional pieces to installations that incorporate the architecture of spaces.
