The Power Plant

In collaboration with Holt Renfrew, The Power Plant presents Power Ball: AURAL SECTS, a collection of sensory shocks, perceptual distortions and acoustic experiences, stuck together with safety pins.
AURAL SECTS is a celebration of the visually loud, the non-conforming and the unexpected that will maraud your mind with sound and moments of reverent silence. The theme explores sonic movements and moments that exist on the fringe and butt heads with the mainstream. The evening will pair visual art activations with acoustic experiences to incite conversations around subversion, DIY practice and how art contributes to resistance.

Join us in September 2020 for an evening of unique art installations, performances, cocktails and more —all in support of the ambitious exhibitions and programming at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery.

POWER BALL PRE-PARTY ARTIST LEEROY NEW

Leeroy Newis an interdisciplinary artist-designer who trained as a sculptor and has worked significantly in production design for film, TV, theatre and performance. This inclination to move from one mode of creative production to another has become the spine of his practice driven by concepts of retro-futurism and hybrid myth-making as world building. The results are immersive installations that use a variety of found objects directly sourced from the material culture of his changing working environment.

Through his collaborations with performers, New is able to transform these same materials into interactive objects and even wearable sculptures culminating in the multi-platform collaborative project Aliens of Manila, which documents ‘alien’ characters inhabiting Manila’s often harsh yet colourful streets. Recently these aliens have started appearing in different parts of the world as UFO ‘OFWs’ (Overseas Filipino Workers).

Leeroy New will be presenting a new commissioned site-specific work and experience for our Pre-Party guests. The experience will include an installation enhanced by a performance in response to our theme of sound experiences, resistance and DIY culture.
