We welcome kids and their families to visit The Power Plant on April 16 for the Power Kids: Letters and Words workshop inspired by [Joi T Arcand’s](https://www.thepowerplant.org/whats-on/exhibitions/in-parallel) artwork!

Joi T. Arcand reclaims Indigenous land with a site-specific commission that marks The Power Plant’s Fleck Clerestory with affirmations in nēhiyawēwin (Cree). Following a discussion about Arcand’s piece in the Fleck Clerestory, Decoded, 2023, which uses Cree text and syllabics, families will learn about text art and create visual artworks by drawing, painting, and collaging.

Power Kids

Joi T. Arcand is an Ottawa-based artist from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Treaty 6 territory. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Great Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, in 2005.

Joi T. Arcand is an Ottawa-based artist from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Treaty 6 territory. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Great Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, in 2005. In 2018, Arcand was shortlisted for the prestigious Sobey Art Award. Her practice includes photography, digital collage, and graphic design. Using Cree language and syllabics, Arcand creates works of art that not only render visible her own complex relationship to language as a nēhiyaw iskwēw raised in the Prairies but also reclaim and Indigenize public spaces through this new visibility. 

Power Kids takes place on select Sundays throughout our exhibition seasons and includes a guided tour in or outside the gallery followed by a short creative activity. Each workshop is different, so kids can return throughout the season and be inspired every time.

Power Kids is a series of free creative workshops for children aged 7–12, led by skilled and dynamic artist-educators and inspired by our current exhibitions.
