Performance

On May 9, join us for {spirit forged}: a performance by artist and educator SA Smythe, inspired by Amartey Golding's exhibition In the comfort of embers! This performance with sound, poetry, and movement will respond to Golding's works presented at The Power Plant.

SA Smythe is a critical theorist, educator, and transmedia artist. Their art practice convenes poetry, soundscape composition, performance, light sculptures, and archival ephemera to choreograph cartographies of black and trans (un)belonging. They have shared their work internationally at venues including the Blackwood Gallery, Toronto; the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto; FADO Performance Art Centre, Toronto; CANGO, Florence; Kampnagel, Hamburg; Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome; GXRLSCHOOL, Los Angeles; SPAZIO GRIOT at Mattatoio Museum, Rome; Africa Writes Literary Festival, London, as a co-headliner; and elsewhere in collaborative and solo projects, installations, workshops, and festivals. Recipient of the 2022 Rome Prize, Smythe is based between Tkaronto, Italy, and unceded Tongva land. They are Assistant Professor of Black Studies & the Archive at the University of Toronto, where they direct the Collaboratory for Black Poiēsis
