The Power Plant

For the last Sunday Scene of this season, we invite you to join the talk with the Director and CEO of the Aga Khan Museum, Dr. Ulrike Al-Khamis, who will speak on the life and work of Iraqi Kurdish artist Hiwa K, as well as his exhibition at The Power Plant, Do you remember what you are burning?. Dr. Al-Khamis will discuss Hiwa K's experience and creative trajectory, and his multi-layered, globalized identity as an artist. She will take the audience through the artist's complex art projects and analyze his aim to transcend one-track narratives and world views.

Dr. Ulrike Al-Khamis, Director and CEO of the Aga Khan Museum, is a well-known museum professional and academic in the field of Islamic art, with over twenty-five years of experience as a curator and senior advisor for museum and cultural projects. Before coming to Toronto, she worked as Co-Director of the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization as well as Senior Strategic Advisor to the Sharjah Museums Department in the United Arab Emirates from 2007 to 2017. She began her career in Scotland, where she worked as Principal Curator for South Asia and the Middle East at the National Museums of Scotland from 1999 to 2007 and Curator for Muslim Art and Culture at Glasgow Museums from 1994 to 1999. Dr. Al-Khamis holds a PhD in Islamic art from the University of Edinburgh.

Do you remember what you are burning? is a survey exhibition that gathers installations, sculptures, photographs, and films that relate to themes of belonging and displacement by Iraqi Kurdish artist Hiwa K. His artwork evokes political realities, oral histories, alternative teachings, and familial and personal memories inspired by his native homeland of Sulaymaniyah, Iraqi Kurdistan.
