Wilhelm Sasnal (born in Tarnów, 1972) is a Polish artist equally focused on painting and on filmmaking. We are very pleased to present a screening of his work that includes his 35mm feature film Swineherd (2008, 86 min.) preceded by a selection of his short Super-8 films (1998–2003, 27 min.). Drawing equally on the history of music videos and “personal cinema,” and highly sensitive to the juxtaposition of image and music, Sasnal chronicles the world around him in his short films. However, what could be a mundane reality is always filtered through the prism of his subjective vision.

Swineherd is loosely based on the 1842 Hans Christian Andersen fable, with Sasnal using it as a framework upon which to hang a series of beautifully composed but often stark and disconcerting black-and-white images. Set on a decrepit farm in postwar Poland, Sasnal evokes emotion from the fusion of image and action, and the consequent tension created by the difference between perception and reality” (adapted from Shaun Barry, Bath Film Festival).
