Alia Farid
Alia Farid (b. 1985, Kuwait) lives and works in Kuwait City, Kuwait, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her work explores the ways in which modernity reconfigures collectivity and ritual. She has had solo exhibitions in Kunsthalle Basel; Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam; and Portikus, Frankfurt am Main. Recent and upcoming group shows include participation in the Diriyah Biennale; Whitney Biennial; Bienal de São Paulo; Gwangju Biennale; Sharjah Biennial; Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991–2011 at MoMA PS1; Yokohama Triennale; and Asia Pacific Triennial. She has forthcoming solo exhibitions in Chisenhale Gallery, London; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in partnership with Rivers Institute, CAC Passerelle and Detroit Institute of Arts. Farid has a BFA from la Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico, San Juan, an MS from the Visual Arts Program in MIT, Cambridge, and an MA in Museum Studies and Critical Theory from the Programa d’Estudis Independents MACBA, Barcelona. She received the Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award (2023) and was the David and Roberta Logie Fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute (2023–2024).
