The Power Plant and The Vega Foundation are excited to present a program of recent moving image works by contemporary artists. Curated to accompany the Fall 2026 season, Owner of a Lonely Heart transforms the upstairs gallery at The Power Plant into a theatre playing a continuous 80-minute program.
This program explores entanglement as a condition of contemporary life. Under the current system of global capitalism, we are enmeshed with one another. Like a seesaw, the prosperity, abundance, and stability that manifest in one place are often the direct result of the exploitation, scarcity, and violence produced in another. To think of enmeshment is to engage with how people are bound by circumscribed geography and unevenly shaped by networks of extraction and circulation.
The works in this program chart the path of raw materials drawn from the earth, circulated via waterways, and transformed into commodities–be it pearls, oil, electricity, or plastic. Each work frames a dense web of relations linking labourers and ecosystems into global economies. The artists' works variously register the material conditions through which people conceive of their history and locate themselves within the barrage of the present.
About the Artists
Alia Farid
Alia Farid (b. 1985, Kuwait) lives and works in Kuwait City, Kuwait, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her work explores the ways in which modernity reconfigures collectivity and ritual.
Haig Aivazian
Haig Aivazian’s practice grapples with the metamorphic nature of three technologies: artificial light, computation, and law.
Hope Pearl Strickland
Hope Pearl Strickland is an artist-filmmaker from Manchester, UK working with experimental and documentary-based modes, incorporating archival, 16mm and digital practices.
Stephanie Comilang
Stephanie Comilang (b. 1980, Toronto, Canada) is an artist living and working between Toronto and Berlin. Her documentary-based works create narratives that look at how mobility, capital, and labour are shaped on a global scale through various cultural and social factors.
Yuyan Wang
Yuyan Wang (1989, China) is a filmmaker and video artist currently based in Paris. Her works involve recycled materials from the industrial sphere of image production, tracing their mutation and proliferation within digital frameworks and representations.
