This strikingly original portrait of the soccer superstar Zinédine Zidane plunges the viewer into a match between Real Madrid and Villarreal on 23 April 2005. Filmmakers Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno trained seventeen synchronized cameras on Zidane’s lone figure, providing a startlingly intimate study of the athlete and the emotions that pass across his face, from the first kick of the ball to when he receives a red card at the game’s end. Along with Mogwai’s haunting music, the sound design recreates the environment of 80,000 spectators as well as the isolated sounds of cleats on the pitch.
